No signs of gas leak: Gene Hackman’s death is now called ‘suspicious’

Legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in separate rooms of their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home, in what authorities have described as a “suspicious” case.

Mystery Surrounds Hackman’s Death

The 95-year-old Oscar-winning actor and his 64-year-old wife were discovered Wednesday afternoon, alongside their deceased dog. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

A search warrant indicated the situation was “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation.” However, no signs of forced entry were found.

Grim Scene Inside the Home

According to the warrant, maintenance workers found the front door ajar before making the tragic discovery. Arakawa was found on the floor of a bathroom, near a space heater, with pills scattered on the countertop. Authorities believe she may have collapsed suddenly.

Hackman was discovered in a mudroom near the kitchen, with officials suggesting he also fell unexpectedly. A German shepherd was found deceased nearby, while two other dogs on the property survived—one inside the bathroom and another outside the home.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the bodies were partially mummified.

No Signs of Foul Play or Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Despite the unusual circumstances, officials say foul play is not suspected. Fire department crews tested for carbon monoxide poisoning, but no evidence was found. The New Mexico Gas Company, which supplies gas to the residence, also conducted tests and found no issues with the pipes.

The couple’s bodies were not formally identified until early Thursday morning.

A Hollywood Icon’s Legacy

Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner, was a cinematic legend known for films like The French Connection, Bonnie and Clyde, The Conversation, and Unforgiven. His decades-long career earned him multiple Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. His last film, Welcome to Mooseport (2004), marked his retirement from acting.

In 2012, Hackman made headlines after being hit by a car while biking in Florida. Though airlifted to the hospital, he suffered only minor injuries.

As the investigation into his and Arakawa’s sudden deaths continues, the entertainment world mourns the loss of one of Hollywood’s greatest talents.
