NEW DELHI — A devastating incident occurred at a pharmaceutical facility in Telangana, a southern state in India, resulting in the death of at least 12 individuals and injuring numerous others, officials reported on Monday.

The fire department discovered the burnt remains of 10 employees within an industrial district located about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Hyderabad, the state capital, according to G.V. Narayana Rao, the state’s fire services director.

In addition, two workers who suffered from extensive burns were declared dead at a hospital, Rao noted. Efforts are ongoing to clear the wreckage of the destroyed pharmaceutical unit of Sigachi Industries in case any additional workers are trapped inside. Around 36 injured individuals have been hospitalized for treatment.

“The explosion occurred in a spray dryer unit at the factory, which is responsible for converting raw materials into fine powder for pharmaceutical purposes,” Rao explained.

India serves as a base for several leading pharmaceutical firms, contributing significantly to the worldwide distribution of generic drugs and vaccines. The nation’s efficient manufacturing capabilities and cost-effective production have positioned it as a core player in the pharmaceutical industry.

In such factories, where chemical reactors are commonly involved, accidents are not rare. These incidents highlight the urgent need for strict safety guidelines and comprehensive oversight to safeguard a sector that is vital to global public health.

Sigachi Industries Limited specializes in the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients, intermediates, and vitamin-mineral blends. The company operates five manufacturing plants within India and has branches in both the United States and the United Arab Emirates, as per their website.

Expressing his sorrow over this tragic event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared financial aid amounting to 200,000 Indian rupees ($2,333) for each family who lost a loved one in this incident.
