CLEVELAND — During Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Guardians shortstop Gabriel Arias was escorted off the field in a cart after suffering a sprain to his left ankle. This incident occurred in the third inning of the match. Initial X-rays conducted on Arias’ lower leg did not reveal any fractures, and he is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday for further evaluation.
The injury happened as Arias went deep to field a grounder hit by Masyn Winn, with one out recorded in the inning. Unfortunately, his left spike got caught on the grass, leading to an awkward fall and causing him to roll his ankle. This mishap allowed the ball to pass into left field for a single. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound athlete immediately clutched his lower leg in pain and lay on the field for a few minutes. Medical staff quickly attended to him, fitting an immobilizer on his leg before transporting him from the field via a medical cart.
Currently, Arias holds a batting average of .231, with six home runs and 31 RBIs across 77 games. This season marks the first time the 25-year-old Venezuelan has taken on a full-time starting role for the team.
