Max Verstappen, reigning Formula 1 champion, experienced an unexpectedly close encounter with a Mercedes car during the Austrian Grand Prix, but not in a way anyone envisaged. Days of speculation hinted at a potential move from Red Bull to Mercedes for Verstappen, but those rumors took a backseat after the race.

The Grand Prix was short-lived for Verstappen, as he was knocked out of contention in less than half a lap by Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, who could potentially be a future teammate. Reflecting on the incident, Verstappen emphasized his consistent approach to racing, stating, “I think we try to do our best always. My mentality doesn’t change. We have won a lot in the past. Sometimes you have to accept that you are not winning, and we just try to do the best we can.”

Discussing how the collision might affect his title defense, Verstappen expressed hope that the incident wouldn’t be a focal point in the future, saying, “Hopefully then maybe people will not mention it too much any more.” The event was part of an eventful week where he struggled with a lack of grip during qualifying and started seventh on the grid. Additionally, George Russell hinted at potential discussions between Verstappen and Mercedes regarding a future switch.

Currently, Verstappen holds third place in the standings, trailing 61 points behind leader Oscar Piastri. The Red Bull Ring has historically been favorable to Verstappen and his team, serving as a venue where he’s achieved some notable successes, impressively winning five times. But this race saw an uncharacteristic mistake from Antonelli, a promising 18-year-old talent. A late brake and locked rear wheels saw Antonelli dive recklessly into a tight corner, inadvertently causing Verstappen’s car to spin and squandering both drivers’ races.

Caught in the aftermath, Verstappen reported the collision to his team, noting, “I’m out, I got hit like crazy.” After his car was hoisted away, he acknowledged the crowd, then exchanged a few words with Antonelli as they left the scene. This marked Verstappen’s first scoreless race in over a year, a streak dating back to the Australian Grand Prix in March 2024. This race added to Verstappen’s difficult week at a track where he usually finds significant success.

Further compounding Red Bull’s dismal home race, Yuki Tsunoda collided with Alpine’s Franco Colapinto during a heated contest for 13th position. This incident forced a pit stop for a new front wing. Tsunoda finished last, extending his streak of races without points to four.
