Cristiano Ronaldo has prioritized resting and preparing for a potential record-breaking sixth World Cup appearance over joining another team to participate in the Club World Cup. In an Instagram video shared after extending his contract with his Saudi club Al Nassr by two years, Ronaldo explained, “I had some offers to play in the Club World Cup, but I thought it would be better to rest well and prepare thoroughly because this season will be very demanding as it culminates with the World Cup.” He emphasized that he aims to be in top form not only for Al Nassr but also for the Portuguese national team.
At 40 years old, Ronaldo recently played a crucial role in Portugal’s victory over Spain, securing the Nations League trophy in a tense penalty shootout. The soccer icon’s future was the subject of much speculation, with many expecting a transfer to engage in the Club World Cup currently held in the U.S.
Ronaldo, along with his longtime Argentine competitor Lionel Messi, is poised to potentially become one of the first players to compete in six World Cups during next year’s tournament, scheduled to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In an earlier landmark, Ronaldo became the first male footballer to score in five different World Cups in Qatar three years ago. By maintaining his commitment to Al Nassr with the latest contract extension, the five-time Ballon d’Or recipient is set to continue his illustrious career at least until the age of 42.
