WANTAGH, N.Y. — A young woman was reportedly bitten by a presumed juvenile shark while enjoying the water at a beach in suburban New York, as reported by state authorities. The 20-year-old victim, who has not been named, encountered this incident at Jones Beach State Park on Long Island, where she sustained minor injuries to her left leg and foot but did not suffer any life-threatening harm.

The attack occurred on Wednesday as the woman stood in waist-deep water. Although she did not witness the creature that bit her, responding agencies carried out a drone search to detect any hazardous marine life. Unfortunately, the search yielded no findings. However, after evaluating images of her wounds and reviewing additional factors, experts have deduced that a juvenile sand tiger shark was “most likely” responsible for the injury, indicated state officials.

Following this unsettling episode, swimming activities at the park were halted as a preventive measure. Authorities ensured the safety of beachgoers by employing drones and lifeguards to thoroughly inspect the swimming area. Once those efforts confirmed the area was secure, swimming resumed by Thursday morning.
