SUNRISE, Fla. — Sam Bennett had the opportunity to enter free agency and choose his team, likely securing a more lucrative contract than what the Florida Panthers could provide. However, his priority was winning.
In a decision that underscores his commitment to success, Bennett, the most recent Conn Smythe Award winner for his standout playoff performance with the Panthers, explained on Saturday why he opted to sign an eight-year contract worth $64 million with Florida. His reasoning boiled down to a straightforward belief in the team’s future potential.
“I believe there’s much more success ahead of us,” Bennett remarked.
Considering the Panthers’ recent back-to-back Stanley Cup victories, Bennett’s confidence seems well-placed. Key players, including Bennett, Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Reinhart, Carter Verhaeghe, Gustav Forsling, Anton Lundell, and Seth Jones, have secured contracts extending through 2030, solidifying the core of the team.
Having delivered a notable 15-goal playoff performance and claiming the Conn Smythe Trophy, Bennett’s contract status was initially uncertain. Despite this, he expressed a heartfelt desire to remain with the team, even prematurely announcing his intentions at a Miami nightclub—which startled his agent given no official agreement had been reached.
Upon the announcement of Bennett’s contract extension on Friday night, his teammates expressed their excitement and support.
“I got multiple FaceTime calls right away,” Bennett shared. “Some of the guys were together and just so excited. The group chat blew up. I’ve mentioned countless times, this group is incredibly close. We have so many players who genuinely care for one another. I definitely felt the love last night.”
Bennett plays a crucial role for the Panthers both offensively and defensively. This season, he was one of only three NHL players to tally at least 50 points and 90 penalty minutes, alongside Ottawa’s Brady Tkachuk and Washington’s Tom Wilson.
His dedication stems from not wanting to risk losing the unique environment he cherishes. Playing for Florida with a team he loves made the decision easy; no financial increase or new opportunity could alter his choice.
“I truly believe we have the potential to build a dynasty here,” Bennett declared. “Being part of this team and its ongoing journey is truly an honor. The organization has so many talented components that define our success, and it’s a privilege to contribute to that. I’m eager to help grow our legacy over the next eight years.”
