In McDonough, Georgia, an extraordinary sight captured the attention of many when an exceptionally bright object made its way across the Southeast U.S. sky on Thursday at midday.
The spectacle, which caught the attention of onlookers in Georgia and South Carolina around 12:30 p.m., is believed to be a meteor or space debris, revealed the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City, Georgia, through their social media platform.
In Henry County, Georgia, a resident experienced an unexpected occurrence when a rock reportedly crashed through their roof while a sonic boom resonated from the fireball’s trajectory. This incident resulted in a golf ball-sized hole in the ceiling and a crack on the laminate flooring, noted the weather service.
The authorities are probing the mysterious object that landed roughly 25 miles southeast of Atlanta.
Numerous cameras, including dashboard and doorbell devices across several Southeastern states, captured the dazzling fireball slicing through the sky. More than 140 sightings of the object were reported to the American Meteor Society by observers scattered across Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee.
Though meteors and space debris frequently breach Earth’s atmosphere, it’s uncommon for one to be so luminous that it can be seen in broad daylight.
The brilliant fireball resulted from friction as it sped through the atmosphere, significantly reducing in speed. According to NASA, almost all such objects disintegrate into tiny fragments before they make contact with the Earth’s surface.
