In a significant move, the San Jose Sharks have announced that they have placed veteran defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic on unconditional waivers with the intention of buying out the remaining year on his contract. This decision marks a turning point, as Vlasic has been an integral part of the franchise for nearly two decades. At 38, Vlasic has played an impressive 1,465 games, all with the Sharks since 2006, solidifying his place as a longstanding pillar in the team’s history.

Throughout his career, only legendary defensemen Ray Bourque and Nicklas Lidstrom have logged more games for a single team in the NHL, including both regular-season and playoff appearances. Vlasic played a crucial role during San Jose’s competitive era, where they made it to the playoffs in 13 out of 14 seasons and advanced to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016.

Reflecting on the decision, Sharks general manager Mike Grier expressed the difficulty in parting with such a pivotal figure. “This was a difficult decision to make today, with how much Marc has meant to the San Jose organization for 19 years,” Grier said. He reminisced about witnessing Vlasic’s debut season and his development into a world-class defenseman. Known for his defensive prowess, Vlasic consistently undertook challenging assignments against top-tier players across the league.

Vlasic, who hails from Montreal, was also a key contributor to Canada’s gold-medal victory at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Unfortunately, his participation last season was limited by injuries, confining him to 27 games where he secured three points.

Financially, the buyout affects the Sharks’ salary cap, saving them $2.3 million against the cap next season, although it adds an extra $1.2 million cost for the following year. Grier acknowledged Vlasic’s deep influence and invaluable presence in the organization by highlighting his selection to represent Canada in numerous prestigious tournaments.

“He brought immense expertise and experience to the organization daily,” Grier noted, acknowledging Vlasic as not only a top-tier defenseman in the history of the franchise but also as one of its finest players overall. The Sharks extend their gratitude to Vlasic for his unwavering dedication and service and offer their best wishes for his future endeavors.
