Lara Gut-Behrami, a distinguished Swiss skier and two-time overall World Cup champion, has announced her intentions to retire following the forthcoming Olympic season. This announcement was made during a sponsor event in Zurich.

At 34, Gut-Behrami is planning a shift in her personal life, aiming to relocate to London. There, she wishes to reunite with her husband, Valon Behrami, a former Swiss international footballer. Valon Behrami is set to assume a new role as the sporting director at Watford, an English soccer club. While discussing her future, Gut-Behrami playfully mentioned that she does not envision herself as a “cleaning lady,” and she expressed a desire to potentially embrace motherhood.

Gut-Behrami has had a remarkable career, securing overall World Cup titles in the 2015-16 and 2023-24 seasons, with a formidable tally of 48 World Cup victories, placing her fifth on the all-time women’s list. Her Olympic achievements are impressive as well – she clinched a gold medal in super-G and a bronze in giant slalom at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, as well as a bronze in the downhill event during the 2014 Sochi Games.

One of the highlights of Gut-Behrami’s career occurred during the 2021 World Championships held in Cortina d’Ampezzo. She performed exceptionally, winning gold in both the super-G and giant slalom, and securing a bronze medal in the downhill event.

Cortina d’Ampezzo will once again be in the spotlight as it hosts women’s skiing events in the upcoming Winter Games in February, where Gut-Behrami is poised to make her fourth Olympic appearance. Notably, she could not participate in the 2010 Vancouver Games due to an injury.

Gut-Behrami made an impressive entry into the competitive skiing world at the young age of 16, making her World Cup debut back in 2007. Her journey since then has cemented her legacy as one of the finest in the sport.
