BALTIMORE – Jacob Latz has potentially carved a niche for himself in the Texas Rangers’ pitching rotation following a remarkable performance on Tuesday night that had his manager Bruce Bochy contemplating his future role. Bochy acknowledged Latz’s versatility, noting that he could be a crucial asset as either a starter or a bullpen pitcher due to his extensive skills. Latz made a significant impact while pitching against Baltimore, holding the Orioles hitless well into the seventh inning. Despite an initial four-run lead slipping away, the Texas Rangers managed to secure a dramatic 6-5 victory in the 10th inning.

Latz achieved personal milestones during the game, setting new career highs with six-plus innings pitched and with an 88-pitch count, subsequently lowering his season’s ERA to an impressive 3.22. Reflecting on the game, Latz expressed uncertainty regarding his role going forward but relished the enjoyment of his standout performance. It was his third career start and his second for this season. His no-hit bid ended when Ramón Laureano hit a single to center in the seventh inning; Latz exited the game shortly after, with Texas ahead 4-0 at that juncture.

Chris Martin took over pitching duties but permitted Baltimore to reclaim the lead by surrendering home runs to Gary Sanchez, Ramón Urías, and Ryan O’Hearn, leaving the Rangers trailing 5-4. However, the Rangers rallied, with Jonah Heim delivering a sacrifice fly that tied the game, followed by Evan Carter’s decisive run enabled by Sam Haggerty’s grounder in extra innings.

Latz recorded three walks and four strikeouts during the game, notably fanning the last three batters he faced in the fifth inning. His previous long outing in the major leagues came just days before when he pitched 5 2/3 innings in a relief role during a loss to Kansas City. Emphasizing the prestige and desire to be a starting pitcher, Latz admitted that it’s an exciting prospect, although he’s ready to contribute in any capacity.
