MILWAUKEE — Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Michael Darrell-Hicks has made a swift return to the major leagues after being designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Angels just a little over two weeks ago.

On Tuesday, the Pirates promoted Darrell-Hicks to their roster, sending right-hander Hunter Stratton to their Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis. This call-up came in the wake of a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, a game in which the Pirates utilized five pitchers and needed a fresh arm.

Darrell-Hicks, 27, recorded a 1-0 record with a 9.39 ERA during six outings for the Angels before being designated on June 8. The Pirates successfully claimed him off waivers and initially sent him to Indianapolis, where he pitched two scoreless innings before getting the call to join the majors.

The reliever made his Pirates debut on Tuesday night, pitching two innings without conceding any runs in a 9-3 defeat to Milwaukee. Despite his solid performance, Darrell-Hicks threw a wild pitch that allowed Milwaukee’s Jackson Chourio to score from third base during the fifth inning.

Reflecting on his return, Darrell-Hicks said, “It’s been a lot to digest. Obviously, reaching the major leagues is everyone’s ambition, so I take pride in that achievement. Though I’m not content with how things have unfolded for me so far, I’m focused on improving my game and regaining my comfort on the mound.”

On the other hand, 28-year-old Hunter Stratton has encountered difficulties this year, having allowed seven runs across just 2 2/3 innings over three games with the Pirates. His career stats include a 2-1 record with a 4.70 ERA and one save over 47 games.

Pirates manager Don Kelly expressed confidence in Stratton, saying, “He’s been a reliable pitcher for us before. I encouraged him to keep refining his skills. The decision was purely practical as we needed to replenish our bullpen and bring in a fresh arm. I advised him to stay true to himself and continue honing his craft.”
