FRISCO, Texas — A young man involved in a deadly incident at a high school sports event has been formally charged with murder, according to a local prosecutor’s announcement. A grand jury in Collin County indicted Karmelo Anthony on charges connected to the untimely death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. This comes following a tragic stabbing that took place during a school track meet on April 2 in the suburb of Frisco.

Greg Willis, the District Attorney for Collin County, remarked that the incident has had a profound impact, resonating not only within the community but beyond its borders. At the time of the confrontation, Anthony was also 17 and has reached adulthood since then.

“When violence disrupts a school event, it reverberates through the community,” expressed Willis, underscoring the gravity of the tragedy. The track and field meet, which saw participation from various high schools in the Frisco Independent School District, was where the unfortunate clash erupted.

As detailed in an official arrest report, a dispute arose when Anthony entered a tent allocated to Metcalf’s team. Metcalf asked him to leave, prompting Anthony to retort with a challenge, “Touch me and see what happens.” Metcalf indeed made contact, escalating the situation further when Anthony dared him to throw a punch. This sequence led to Metcalf grasping Anthony, at which point Anthony allegedly resorted to using a knife, the report states.

In his defense, Anthony reportedly informed an officer that his actions were in self-defense, claiming Metcalf initiated contact by placing hands on him.

Anthony’s legal representation, led by attorney Mike Howard, conveyed confidence in presenting a comprehensive account during court proceedings. “We believe that once all aspects of the case are examined, it will become evident that Karmelo Anthony might have acted out of self-preservation,” Howard stated.

Should Anthony be found guilty, he could face life imprisonment. In the meantime, he has been released on house arrest following a reduction in his bond.
