This year’s NBA draft is set to diverge from recent trends by not featuring a French player as the first overall pick, a role occupied by Victor Wembanyama in 2023 and Zaccharie Risacher the previous year. Instead, the spotlight is on Duke’s Cooper Flagg, projected to secure the No. 1 spot. However, the draft continues to showcase international talent, with a significant number of selections coming from outside the United States.

Diverse talents from across the globe are likely to be represented among the 59 picks during the draft. Players hailing from countries such as the Bahamas, South Sudan, Russia, Canada, China, Australia, Lithuania, Spain, Israel, and France are expected to make their mark. While some have honed their skills in American colleges, others are gearing up for the opportunity to play in the NBA or perhaps in Canada with the Toronto Raptors.

Maxime Raynaud, a promising first-round prospect from France and Stanford center, regards trailblazers from previous international drafts as pioneers who paved the way for the current generation. “The guys who came before us, these are guys that kind of created a path, like prepared the NBA to welcome Europeans and to make life easier for us,” he said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a strong work ethic and a determined mindset.

With the potential for a third of draft picks to be international, it reflects the wider trend in the league, where approximately 30% of NBA players last season were born outside of the United States. Some of these up-and-coming international prospects have already started building a reputation in the U.S. through college basketball. Notable mentions include VJ Edgecombe, from the Bahamas and likely a top-five pick, and South Sudan’s Khaman Maluach, a top-10 contender still learning the intricacies of the game.

Maluach reflects on his aspirational journey, remarking, “If you told me three years ago, I didn’t think I would be sitting here. But I knew one day I would be sitting here.”

As the draft unfolds, several international stories are worth following:

Noa Essengue from France stands out as a 6-foot-10 power forward for the German team Ratiopharm Ulm, expected to be a lottery pick. His arrival at the draft could be contingent on his team’s league championship schedule.

Joan Beringer, another French player, boasts remarkable physical attributes, including a 6-foot-11 frame and a 7-4 wingspan, complemented by his Slovenian professional experience and tactical defensive skills. He’s anticipated to be selected mid-first round.

Hugo González from Spain has a burgeoning reputation since his 2023 debut with Real Madrid and is viewed as a future leader of Spain’s national basketball team.

Nolan Traoré, a young French point guard standing at 6-3, is expected to enter the first round, though his exact placement remains uncertain. He could be one of three French players chosen in the initial picks.

From China comes Hansen Yang, whose 7-1 stature naturally draws comparisons to Yao Ming. After impressing at the draft combine, Yang is considered a strong first-round contender, notable for his adept footwork and passing, despite his ongoing potential for growth.
