BRUSSELS — Union Saint-Gilloise triumphed in the Belgian league, claiming their first championship in nearly a century with a 3-1 victory over Gent on Sunday.
Promise David was the standout player, scoring twice, while Franjo Ivanovic contributed with another goal. This significant win marked Union’s first league title since their last victory in 1935.
The club entered the final leg of the championship playoffs holding a one-point advantage, having come close to clinching the title in the preceding three seasons. Back in 2022 and 2024, Union topped the regular season standings but stumbled in the playoffs, allowing Club Brugge to claim the title. The 2023 season was particularly dramatic, as a helicopter carrying league officials and the championship trophy had to divert from Union’s small Joseph Marien Stadium.
On Sunday, the title race was a two-team contest between Union and Brugge. Brugge ended their match with a 1-1 draw against Antwerp, placing them three points short and securing second place.
Union began the season slowly under new coach Sébastien Pocognoli, following the lucrative sales of several star players. However, with Promise David’s goal-scoring prowess, the team climbed to third in the regular season standings.
A series of five clean-sheet matches, including a crucial 1-0 victory at Brugge on April 24th, saw Union ascend to the top of the standings for the first time.
Union Saint-Gilloise’s victory over Gent reaffirms their status in the Belgian league and marks a historic achievement for the Brussels-based club.
