In a significant update for the fans of BTS, the globally acclaimed K-pop group, all seven members have now completed their mandatory military service. Suga, well-known as a rapper and songwriter within the band, has officially concluded his service in South Korea’s alternative military sector. After utilizing his accumulated leave, his formal discharge was set for Saturday, though he completed his duties on Wednesday.

His agency, Big Hit Entertainment, stated that there were no planned events surrounding his release, due to concerns about potential overcrowding—an understandable precaution given BTS’s massive fanbase.

This milestone marks the conclusion of military obligations for BTS, who are planning a full reunion in 2025. The group is eagerly awaited by their fans and promised to come back together stronger. Recently, RM and V were discharged last week, with Jimin and Jung Kook following, all having enlisted at the end of 2023. Out of the seven, Suga uniquely completed his commitment via an alternative service as a social service agent.

Jin, the eldest in the group, completed his military service back in June 2024, while J-Hope was officially discharged in October of the same year.

In South Korea, it is mandatory for all able-bodied men aged 18 to 28 to serve in the military for a period of 18 to 21 months, a conscription policy aimed at maintaining a defense posture against possible threats from North Korea. However, exemptions are granted to certain athletes and artists who garner top awards in national or international competitions, thereby enhancing South Korea’s prestige. Notably, K-pop stars like BTS did not initially fall under these exemptions.

However, in a nod to their substantial cultural impact, the Military Service Act was revised in 2020, permitting K-pop artists to defer their service until the age of 30. Subsequently, in 2022, there was considerable public debate regarding possible further exemptions for BTS. Eventually, their management agency declared in October 2022 that all members would proceed to fulfill their required duties, which they have now successfully completed.
