MATERA, Italy — Known for its unique stone architecture, Matera in southern Italy is also recognized as the “City of Stones.” However, this picturesque area is about to add Jerusalem to its accolades as it transforms into the setting for the sixth season of the widely acclaimed religious series “The Chosen.” This season delves into the events leading to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Swapping their Texas studio for Italy’s enchanting landscapes, the cast and crew spent three weeks filming in this archaeological wonder. George Harrison Xanthis, portraying the apostle John, shared that being immersed in Matera’s ancient ambiance enriched his performance. “Whereas in Texas and Utah, you step from civilization into the ancient world, here you are constantly surrounded by it,” he noted.
Dallas Jenkins, the director and showrunner of “The Chosen,” emphasized the importance of shooting the crucifixion scenes against a genuine horizon. Matera, which previously served as a backdrop for “The Passion of the Christ,” “Mary Magdalene,” and “No Time to Die,” effortlessly creates the desired atmosphere. An added layer of authenticity emerges from the vibrant scent of spices drifting from a nearby prop cart.
For fans of the series, Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus, has become a beloved figure, often eliciting blushing and star-struck reactions as if encountering a religious icon. Jenkins confirmed witnessing people tear up around Roumie, expressing emotions and reverence typically reserved for sacred experiences. While on set, Roumie was kept from media interactions to maintain focus during intense scenes that left him physically transformed with makeup and prosthetics.
Roumie isn’t alone in experiencing the show’s impact. Vanessa Benavente, known for her role as Mother Mary, recounted a moment where she was recognized during a routine school drop-off despite wearing a hat. “It’s such a responsibility when they say, ‘I know you are not her, but it’s the closest thing,’ ” she shared.
Originally financed through crowdfunding in 2017, “The Chosen” debuted on Amazon Prime Video, supported by contributions to the nonprofit Come and See Foundation. The series expanded its reach with theater releases, starting with Season 3. Season 5 premiered in three theatrical parts, collectively titled “The Chosen: Last Supper,” earning significant box office returns worldwide.
On set, Jenkins’ call to action animated scenes of depth, including Jesus’ arduous journey to Golgotha. Elizabeth Tabish, depicting Mary Magdalene, was visibly moved after engaging in heart-wrenching scenes. “Experiencing your friend paraded and mocked for execution — it’s pure grief,” she expressed, wiping tears.
However, she assured that those intense emotions are left behind with the comforting allure of Italian culinary delights post-filming. The emotional depth of the series’ portrayal is balanced by the rich local experiences during the shoot.
Season 5 debuted on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S., with episodes rolling out over two weeks. Jenkins highlights the exploration of pivotal biblical moments such as the Last Supper and Judas’ betrayal. He aims to draw viewers into a more intimate connection with the characters amidst these grand narratives.
One of the series’ key objectives is maintaining deep audience engagement through authentic storytelling as the plot thickens. Season 5 will also be made available for free on the show’s dedicated app and website starting September 13. Looking ahead, Season 6 is set for a 2027 release, with the seventh and final season expected to focus on Jesus’ resurrection.
