In a tragic turn of events, Doug Skaff Jr., a prominent newspaper executive from West Virginia and a seasoned Democratic leader, passed away on Tuesday due to an unfortunate accident on Interstate 79. He was 48. Skaff held the position of president at HD Media, the publishing house for several state newspapers including the Charleston Gazette-Mail and the Herald-Dispatch of Huntington.
The Gazette-Mail shared the somber news of Skaff’s passing on their website late Tuesday evening. The incident occurred in Lewis County, situated in north-central West Virginia, though the specifics of what transpired remain undisclosed. An operator from the Lewis County state police declined to provide further details.
Skaff dedicated nearly 11 nonconsecutive years to serving in the supermajority-Republican state House of Delegates, representing Kanawha County. In 2023, he stepped down from his position and joined the GOP as part of an unsuccessful attempt to become secretary of state in 2024. During a notable period, Skaff also took on the role of interim executive director for the West Virginia Press Association. Recently, he was involved in acquiring a popular restaurant in Charleston and had announced plans to run for the state Senate the following year, as observed on the secretary of state’s website.
In response to the news, Governor Patrick Morrisey took to social media platform X to express his condolences, describing Skaff as a significant figure both in the legislature and the Charleston community. “Doug was a longtime state legislator, the Minority Leader of the West Virginia House of Delegates, and omnipresent in the Charleston community. He will be greatly missed by many,” Morrisey shared.
Doug Skaff Jr.’s legacy continues through his surviving wife and three sons. Reflecting on Skaff’s contributions and character, West Virginia Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin remarked on his profound impact, emphasizing Skaff’s infectious humor and his passionate commitment to his family and children. “Doug Skaff was more than just a colleague; he was a friend to many of us, even after he left the legislature,” Pushkin stated, honoring his dedication and character.
