WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Kane Williamson, the former captain of the New Zealand cricket team, has opted once again to decline a central contract with New Zealand Cricket. As a result, he is likely to be absent from the Black Caps’ two-test series in Zimbabwe next month.
Last year, Williamson made a similar decision, choosing not to commit to a central contract. This move allowed him the freedom to participate in Twenty20 leagues and various other tournaments around the globe. Despite this, he still signed a casual contract last year and contributed significantly, playing in nine of New Zealand’s 13 test matches in 2024 and amassing over 1,000 runs.
On Tuesday, New Zealand Cricket released a list of 20 contracted players from which Williamson, along with Devon Conway, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Lockie Ferguson, who are also engaged in T20 leagues overseas, were omitted. Williamson is anticipated to again agree to a casual contract arrangement.
This year’s list of contracted players features first-time members such as all-rounders Muhammad Abbas and Zak Foulkes, wicketkeeper Mitch Hay, and spinner Adi Ashok. The inclusion follows the retirement of veteran player Tim Southee and the absence of regulars Ish Sodhi, Ajaz Patel, and Josh Clarkson.
Williamson is currently participating in the English County Championship and the T20 Blast, representing Middlesex, as well as playing for the London Spirit in The Hundred. His county obligations are expected to coincide with New Zealand’s series against Zimbabwe, scheduled for late July to early August.
During a press interaction in London last month, Williamson mentioned that his future with a casual contract remains “a work in progress,” praising New Zealand Cricket for being supportive in navigating this arrangement. He expressed gratitude for the flexibility afforded to him by the cricket board.
The selection of the top 20 contracted players was based on their domestic and international performances over the previous year.
New Zealand Cricket’s chief executive, Scott Weenink, expressed enthusiasm about the fresh talent, noting that “The contracts with Mitch, Muhammad, Adi, and Zak reflect the incredible talent coming through our system.” He continued, “These players have shown they can compete at the highest level, and their hunger to represent the Black Caps is exciting. We’re thrilled to see this group drive our team forward.”
