Former Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, Jay Mitchell, has declared his candidacy for the position of state attorney general. On Monday, Mitchell shared his intentions, saying, “This campaign is not just about me, but about our collective fight for the future of Alabama. I plan to confront the radical left, support the Trump agenda, and remain relentless in my advocacy for our state.”
Mitchell recently stepped down from his role on the Supreme Court. As he aims for the attorney general’s office, which ranks as the highest law enforcement position in the state, he outlined his campaign’s priorities. He emphasized a commitment to tackling violent crime, enforcing immigration laws, and upholding the law enforcement community. Additionally, Mitchell vowed to “protect the unborn” and oppose initiatives he refers to as the “woke agenda.”
“No boys in girls’ sports. No Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). No more woke nonsense,” he commented in his campaign announcement. Among his noteworthy contributions as a judge, Mitchell is recognized for a Supreme Court decision recognizing frozen embryos as children under Alabama’s Wrongful Death of Minor Act. This decision permitted certain couples to pursue wrongful death claims after a mishap in 2020 led to the destruction of their frozen embryos at a storage facility in southern Alabama. While the ruling temporarily halted IVF services and attracted national attention over potential civil liabilities, Mitchell did not bring it up during his campaign announcement.
The political race also includes Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey. Current Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is not eligible to run again due to term limits. Instead, Marshall has set his sights on the U.S. Senate, where he seeks to fill the seat currently occupied by Sen. Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville, in turn, has decided to run for governor rather than seek another term in the Senate.
