DETROIT — Frank Ragnow, the influential centerpiece for the Detroit Lions and a four-time Pro Bowl honoree, declared his retirement from the NFL on Monday, concluding a commendable seven-year career. At 29, Ragnow shared via social media his endeavors to convince himself of his readiness to continue playing. However, he admitted, “but I’m not.”
Ragnow expressed his heartfelt sentiments, stating, “I have given this team everything I have and I thought I had more to give, but the reality is I simply don’t.” Recognizing the importance of his health, Ragnow remarked on the difficulty of deciding to step away. Drafted by the Lions in 2018 as the 20th pick, Ragnow served as a cornerstone for the team and a pivotal part of the Lions’ resurgence under coach Dan Campbell.
Throughout his career, Ragnow persevered through a series of injuries. In 2021, after completing a season while enduring a fractured throat, he secured a four-year, $54 million contract extension, becoming the NFL’s highest-paid center at that time. His hard work earned him second-team All-Pro accolades in 2020, 2023, and 2024. Under the direction of former coach Matt Patricia, Ragnow’s first Pro Bowl selection came in 2020, with subsequent selections from 2022 to 2024.
Reflecting on his football journey, Ragnow expressed his mixed emotions: “These past couple of months have been very trying as I’ve come to the realization that my football journey is ending and I’m officially retiring from the NFL.” He extended profound gratitude to the Lions, saying, “The Lions organization has been absolutely incredible throughout this process and I can’t emphasize enough how grateful I am for this team and all the fans. It was an absolute honor going to battle for you all.”
Harrison Phillips, a seasoned defensive tackle in his eighth year with the rival Minnesota Vikings, praised Ragnow intensely upon the news of his retirement. Phillips held Ragnow in high regard, calling him “one of the best centers I’ve ever had the privilege to play against.” Describing the intensity of their matchups, Phillips noted the necessity of heightened preparation whenever faced with Ragnow on the field.
Phillips also mentioned how Ragnow’s blocking techniques were of such a high caliber that even his own teammates on the Vikings’ offensive line sought advice on countering Ragnow’s formidable skills. “The way that he played was acknowledged amongst all players on both sides of the line of scrimmage,” he shared, underscoring the respect Ragnow garnered throughout the league.
