NEW YORK — The New York Mets showcased their power and pitching prowess as they finished a sweep against the Colorado Rockies with a 5-3 victory at home. Francisco Lindor’s homer in the game and Clay Holmes’ impressive performance on the mound highlighted the win.
In a dominant showing, the Mets secured their seventh win in eight games, concluding a successful 7-2 stretch at home. This recent surge of victories bumped them back into the top spot of the NL East, pushing them one game ahead of their division rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Rockies, on the other hand, continued their struggles, extending their losing streak to eight games. Their current record of 9-50 marks the worst for any major league team through the first 59 games of a season since 1901. They have experienced being swept in half of their series, repetition sustained by few teams since 1900.
Pete Alonso delivered a significant contribution with a three-run homer that came in the fourth inning, while Lindor delivered a tie-breaking homer in the fifth, underlining his power presence as the Mets extended their winning streak in games where he’s homed. Only the Brooklyn Dodgers, led by Carl Furillo, have a longer such streak in Major League history.
Juan Soto also added to the scoreline with a solo shot in the eighth, sealing the victory at 5-3. Holmes, the Mets’ starter, achieved a career-best with a seven-inning performance, allowing only three hits, including two Rockies’ homers while limiting walks entirely and striking out three.
Notably, Holmes adapted seamlessly from his relief role into a starter, having sustained six or more innings in the majority of his recent starts. Relievers Reed Garrett and Edwin Díaz ensured a smooth finish, with Díaz collecting his 13th save of the season.
For the Rockies, rookie Carson Palmquist faced a challenging outing, giving up four runs over 4 2/3 innings, but managed to record eight strikeouts, the highest in his fledgling career.
The pivotal moment in the game came as Lindor homered soon after Tyler Freeman’s shot had tied the game. Colorado continued their struggle, failing to hold consecutive inning leads since its last victory nearly two weeks ago.
Looking ahead, the Rockies plan to send Germán Márquez to the mound in the upcoming match against the Miami Marlins, hoping to change their fortunes. Meanwhile, the Mets are set for a new series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, with Paul Blackburn making his season debut.
