CLEMSON, S.C. — The Kentucky Wildcats displayed an explosive offensive performance, overpowering the No. 11 overall seed Clemson with a decisive 16-4 victory in an elimination game during the Clemson Regional on Sunday.
The Wildcats, who hold a 31-25 record, now face a daunting challenge as they need back-to-back wins against West Virginia, one on Sunday night and another on Monday, to advance further in the tournament.
Clemson, aspiring for a College World Series appearance they have missed since 2010, quickly established an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning. This lead was built on a wild pitch followed by a strategic groundout. However, Kentucky swiftly leveled the playing field by capitalizing on two unearned runs in the ensuing half.
Kentucky seized a command they would not relinquish when Cole Hage initiated the third inning with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch. This momentum was bolstered by Carson Hansen’s RBI single and Ryan Schwartz’s impactful two-run single, pushing the score to 7-2.
In a dominant display during the fourth inning, Luke Lawrence and Hage each provided successive RBI doubles, significantly extending Kentucky’s lead and effectively sealing the outcome of the game.
Carson Hansen turned in a standout performance, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and crossing home plate twice. Meanwhile, Ryan Schwartz had a strong day with two hits and four RBIs to his name.
Nate Harris, the Wildcats’ starting pitcher, delivered a solid outing, allowing three runs across six hits while issuing four walks over six innings. He marked this appearance with his fifth win, bringing his season record to 5-2.
Clemson’s starting pitcher, Talan Bell, struggled against Kentucky’s heavy-hitting lineup, conceding six runs—five of which were earned—over 2 1/3 innings. Jarren Purify offered a highlight for Clemson by going an impressive 4 for 4 at the plate.
Despite a strong season, Clemson concludes with a record of 45-18, falling short in their pursuit of College World Series glory yet again.
