In Baltimore, the Orioles celebrated a significant series victory as Charlie Morton turned in a solid performance on the mound against the Chicago White Sox, leading to a 3-2 win on Sunday. This marked Baltimore’s first series sweep of the season.
Ramón Urías contributed to the Orioles’ offense with two hits and an RBI, while the team’s defense restricted the White Sox to merely five runs across the three-game series. The Orioles have now built a three-game winning streak, matching their best run of the year.
Chicago’s Mike Tauchman hit a home run, but it wasn’t enough, as the White Sox have now lost six out of their last seven games and continue to struggle on the road with a 6-26 record.
Morton (2-7), who had previously faced challenges this season, pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run and six hits. The 41-year-old veteran has now secured victories in his past two outings despite a rocky start that left him with a 0-7 record and a high ERA.
As Morton exited to applause from the gathered 33,037 spectators, the energy contrasted sharply with the boos he received during a difficult April. Reliever Gregory Soto stepped in and allowed a solo homer to Tauchman, but the Orioles retained control. Bryan Baker closed the game, earning his second career save, his first since the previous year.
Adrian Houser (1-1) was aiming to achieve a record for the White Sox with three consecutive scoreless appearances to start his career with the team. However, his streak ended after he conceded three runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings.
The Orioles took an early 2-0 lead in the third inning, halting Houser’s scoreless streak at 14 innings with Urías driving in a run on a single, followed by a sacrifice fly from Ryan O’Hearn.
Chicago managed a run when Andrew Benintendi singled and later scored on an error in the sixth, but Baltimore quickly responded when Dylan Carlson delivered an RBI double.
A pivotal moment came when Morton managed to strike out Edgar Quero with a tying run on second and two outs in the sixth inning.
The Orioles achieved a notable statistic during the game: O’Hearn’s sixth-inning walk extended their streak to 136 games with at least one walk, currently the longest in Major League Baseball and the second longest in Orioles history.
Next up, the White Sox will play the Detroit Tigers with right-hander Jonathan Cannon (2-6, 4.15 ERA) taking the mound on Monday night. Meanwhile, the Orioles will have a day off before Tomoyuki Sugano (4-3, 3.23 ERA) starts on Tuesday in Seattle.
