In North Elba, New York, an unusual incident unfolded in the Adirondack Mountains when two hikers under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms made a frantic call to 911.
They mistakenly reported that a third member of their hiking party had succumbed to death, according to reports by officials on Wednesday.
The Department of Environmental Conservation recounted the event which took place on Saturday.
A state forest ranger was dispatched to Cascade Mountain, a frequently visited peak in the Adirondack High Peaks, after receiving the emergency call.
The hikers who rang 911 also approached a mountaintop steward with claims of being lost.
It was assessed by the steward that the hikers were in “an altered mental state,” as per the department’s statement.
However, the presumed deceased hiker later contacted authorities to assure them of his wellbeing and confirmed he was completely unharmed.
Following this, the state forest ranger guided the two misled hikers to an awaiting ambulance which transported them to a hospital for evaluation.
Meanwhile, the uninvolved, uninjured third hiker was safely taken to their group’s campsite where they were reunited with their friends, officials reported.
