MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The leader of the Alabama Public Service Commission, Twinkle Cavanaugh, has announced that she will be leaving her role next month to pursue a new position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Cavanaugh is set to take on the responsibilities of state director for Rural Development in Alabama, as officially appointed by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins.

In conjunction with other state appointments announced on Wednesday, Rollins expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I look forward to observing the contributions they will make in supporting farmers, ranchers, and producers throughout the nation by aligning with President Trump’s America First policies.”

Cavanaugh, who initially joined the Public Service Commission in 2010, serves on the tri-member board that oversees utility regulations within Alabama. Elevated to the position of commission president in 2012, she also campaigned for lieutenant governor in 2018 but did not manage to clinch the Republican nomination.

Declaring her intention to resign from the commission effective June 1, she stated that Alabama Governor Kay Ivey will be responsible for appointing someone to fill the ensuing vacancy on the utility board.
