COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Transitioning from college to the professional world can be daunting, especially amidst the current economic challenges and political upheavals, as many graduates are discovering. Among those taking this significant step are members of the University of Maryland’s class of 2025, who received their graduation diplomas on Thursday evening, accompanied by words of wisdom from an unexpected but cherished source: Kermit the Frog.
As Kermit addressed the graduates, he offered advice that was both heartfelt and humorous, acknowledging the complexity of stepping into the “real world.” “As you embark on this new journey, let me share some frog-inspired wisdom,” he began. “Instead of leaping over others to achieve your goals, try reaching out to others and making that leap together. Life is indeed more fulfilling when shared.” His message of collaboration over competition resonated deeply with those preparing to step beyond the university’s gates.
The selection of Kermit as this year’s commencement speaker was announced by the university in March, drawing excitement and nostalgia. Kermit, a character created in 1955 and an integral part of the Muppets universe, has a unique connection to the University of Maryland. The Muppets’ creator, Jim Henson, graduated from the university in 1960. Studying home economics, Henson crafted the original Kermit puppet using innovative materials like his mother’s old coat and halves of a Ping-Pong ball. Henson’s legacy continues to be celebrated at the university, even after his passing in 1990.
A famous bronze statue depicting Henson sitting on a bench with Kermit is a cherished symbol on the College Park campus. In a promotional video for the commencement, Kermit was highlighted as an environmental advocate, accomplished author, global icon, and a proponent of creativity and compassion. His bio humorously describes him as “a star of stage, screen, and swamp,” committed to “bringing joy through song and dance.”
University President Darryll J. Pines expressed his delight in having the iconic Muppet share his optimism and insights with the graduates at such a pivotal moment in their lives. Pines noted, “The enthusiasm and perspective Kermit brings are invaluable, making it a memorable occasion for our graduates and their loved ones.” The event, characterized by both celebration and reflection, marked a significant milestone as graduates prepared to take their next step into the future.
