BILBAO, Spain – Tensions flared ahead of the Europa League final in Spain on Wednesday as fans from Tottenham and Manchester United clashed. The scuffles erupted in central Bilbao and nearby areas, where many supporters opted to stay, seeking more affordable accommodations outside the host city. Local authorities anticipated the arrival of over 50,000 English fans in the Basque Country city.

Though skirmishes occurred mostly during the night as fans arrived, no severe injuries were reported. Visuals widely circulated by Spanish media depicted groups of fans confronting each other on Bilbao’s streets, with some hurling tables, trash bins, bottles, and other objects. Clashes weren’t confined to Bilbao alone; reports indicated similar confrontations in San Sebastian and Santander, cities that also saw an influx of English supporters, many of whom did not have tickets for the match.

In light of the event, UEFA had cautioned fans about purchasing unauthorized tickets, highlighting the improbability of gaining stadium entry with such tickets. Each club was granted 15,000 tickets for the 50,000-capacity stadium, with prices starting at a mere 40 euros ($45). Meanwhile, some tickets on resale platforms were fetching thousands of euros.
