In Los Angeles, Alijah Arenas, a promising basketball recruit from Southern California, has emerged from an induced coma following a severe car accident. On Friday, his family issued a statement confirming this positive development. He remains on a ventilator but has demonstrated “significant signs of progress over the past day,” according to details shared with ESPN.

The incident took place before dawn on Thursday in the Reseda area of the San Fernando Valley. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, they received a call just before 5 a.m. about a single-car crash. The Los Angeles Fire Department later specified that the involved vehicle was a Tesla Cybertruck, which had collided with a tree and a fire hydrant, leading to a subsequent fire.

Arenas, having regained some consciousness, could recall elements of the crash. He expressed concern in writing by asking if anyone else had been hurt, indicating his awareness of the seriousness of the accident.

Currently, there has been no official statement regarding the cause of the crash. Meanwhile, Arenas’ family has conveyed their appreciation to those providing support and assistance and assured they will continue to update the public as Alijah’s recovery progresses.

Alijah Arenas is the son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas and is a standout student-athlete at Chatsworth High School in Los Angeles. In an impressive achievement, he recently became the first high school boys’ basketball player at his school to surpass 3,000 career points.
