CLEVELAND – In an impressive display of long-distance shooting, the Cleveland Cavaliers set a new playoff benchmark for 3-pointers in a single quarter. This achievement came during their Eastern Conference first-round Game 2 matchup against the Miami Heat.
The Cavaliers, initially sharing the record with three other teams, claimed it solely with an astounding 11 3-pointers in the second quarter. Cleveland’s sharpshooting surge contributed to a commanding 68-51 halftime lead after initially trailing by a single point at the first period’s conclusion. Although the top-seeded Cavaliers extended their lead to 19 points late in the third quarter, they had to fend off a resilient Heat comeback, eventually securing a 121-112 victory and a 2-0 series advantage.
“Our team has a knack for moments like this throughout the season due to our skilled shooters,” remarked coach Kenny Atkinson. “Everyone was stepping up, and it was thrilling to witness. We possess excellent passers and players who connect well, ensuring proper spacing and energy, which allows our skill level to dominate.”
Max Strus contributed three 3-pointers, while Sam Merrill, De’Andre Hunter, and Donovan Mitchell each added two. Mitchell, who recorded five assists in the period, facilitated all these 3-pointers.
Mitchell, who ended the night with 30 points and seven 3-pointers, shared his strategy: “The execution mirrored my expectations from Game 1 to Game 2. I anticipated getting to the paint and drawing defenders, creating opportunities for my teammates. To see shots consistently fall was a testament to this extraordinary group.”
Previously, Cleveland was among four teams, including Milwaukee, Phoenix, and Utah, to share the 10 3-pointers record in the playoffs. Notably, Mitchell was part of the Jazz team achieving that feat. The regular-season 3-pointer record in a single quarter remains at 12 and has occurred six times.
During the regular season, while Cleveland secured the top spot in the East, they ranked second behind Boston in total 3-pointers made and trailed only Milwaukee in 3-point shooting accuracy.
The Cavaliers completed the game with 22 of 45 shots made from beyond the arc, tying for the sixth most in a playoff game.
Reflecting on the Heat’s defense, Miami coach Erik Spoelstra commented, “When faced with such shooting, persistence is key. There were a few instances of exemplary defense, yet after multiple makes, I sensed some discouragement amongst us.”
