In Los Angeles, authorities have detained a man accused of using a chainsaw to fell large trees in several parts of the city.
Residents, angered by the destruction, began reporting the incidents last Friday afternoon. Photos circulating online depicted mature trees lying across downtown sidewalks, with at least one tree obstructing a street.

The Los Angeles Police Department reported that “numerous” trees were chopped down on municipally owned properties across at least four blocks, and detectives are looking into other sites that may have been affected. Many of the trees appeared to be large ficus trees, frequently located in urban settings where they offered essential shade and were among the few green spaces amidst extensive concrete surroundings.

By Tuesday, police had released an image of a suspect riding a bicycle, dressed in dark attire, and carrying two bags, identified as a man in his 40s.

Later that day, officials confirmed the apprehension of a 45-year-old individual, charged with suspicion of felony vandalism. Evidence was found connecting him to the destruction. There is currently no information regarding any potential motives behind his actions.

Inquiries have been made to the LA Public Defender’s Office to determine if they represent the suspect and could provide any statements on his behalf.

Mayor Karen Bass’s office described the incident as “truly beyond comprehension,” highlighting the scale of the damage. The city’s public works department is currently evaluating the impact and plans to promptly replace the damaged trees.
