DETROIT – In a stellar performance at the mound, Nick Pivetta delivered an impressive game, allowing just two hits over seven innings to lead the San Diego Padres to a 2-0 victory against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. This win marked the Padres’ seventh shutout of the season.
Pivetta, now boasting a 4-1 record, made history by becoming the first pitcher for the Padres to achieve scoreless outings in three of his initial five starts. During this game, he struck out six batters and permitted only one runner to advance to second base. Over his last three starts, Pivetta has an outstanding 0.45 ERA, surrendering just one run on nine hits over 20 innings.
Adding to the Padres’ success, Elias Díaz hit a home run, helping break a rough patch where the team had lost four of their previous six games following a strong 14-3 start to the season. Robert Suarez remained flawless, securing his tenth save opportunity this season. The Tigers, on the other hand, struggled offensively with only three hits.
On the pitching side for Detroit, Jack Flaherty, now with a 1-2 record, conceded two runs on five hits across six innings. He struck out nine and managed to avoid walking any batters.
The Padres capitalized early, establishing a 2-0 advantage in the second inning. Xander Bogaerts initiated the play with an infield single, followed by Díaz launching his first home run of the season into the left-field bullpen.
In an eventful eighth inning, Tigers’ reliever Chase Lee made his major league debut. Entering the game with one out and a runner on first, Lee made a quick impact by catching a soft liner from Manny Machado and doubling off the runner at first base.
Meanwhile, Fernando Tatis Jr. extended his on-base streak to 23 consecutive games, reaching the mark with an eighth-inning hit that also lengthened his hitting streak to 11 games.
A key highlight of the game was Pivetta’s dominance over the top four hitters in the Tigers lineup. Kerry Carpenter, Gleyber Torres, Riley Greene, and Spencer Torkelson were all held hitless, going 0 for 11 with just one walk. Torres was the only player to reach scoring position against Pivetta by earning a walk in the first inning and successfully stealing second.
This victory also positioned the Padres as the first team since the 1992 Atlanta Braves to achieve seven shutouts in their first 24 games.
Looking ahead, the Padres and Tigers are set to conclude their three-game series with an afternoon matchup on Wednesday. San Diego’s left-hander Kyle Hart (2-1, 6.48 ERA) is scheduled to face Detroit’s right-hander Reese Olson (2-1, 4.50 ERA).
