CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — An investigation is underway by Boston’s transit police following a shooting incident at a subway platform located at Harvard University on Sunday. This led the university to instruct students and staff to remain indoors for safety.
Authorities decided to temporarily divert subway passengers, arranging for shuttle buses on a section of the city’s transit system as law enforcement from various departments searched for the suspect involved.
According to Richard Sullivan, the superintendent of the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority Transit Police Department, an initial investigation suggests that a gunman discharged four to five shots targeting an individual on the southbound platform of the Harvard Square station. This suspect subsequently escaped the station.
Sullivan indicated that there is currently no evidence to suggest that the individual targeted, or anyone else present, sustained any injuries.
The police were notified about gunfire at approximately 2:15 p.m. Shortly after, a notification was circulated to the Harvard community, advising them to secure themselves in the nearest building until the situation was resolved. This advisory came as police actively combed the vicinity around the bustling station, which is situated close to Harvard’s main campus in Cambridge.
This precautionary message, which had been displayed on Harvard’s official website, was eventually taken down later in the afternoon on Sunday.
