DALLAS — Southern Methodist University (SMU) has announced the appointment of Damon Evans as its new athletic director, succeeding Rick Hart who stepped down after 13 years in the role. This strategic move comes as the university approaches the end of its inaugural year in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Evans, who previously served as the athletic director at Maryland since 2018, brings a wealth of experience to SMU. He initially joined Maryland as an associate athletic director in 2014, after fulfilling the role of Georgia’s athletic director from 2004 to 2010.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Evans said, “Although leaving an institution that has become a part of your family is challenging, the opportunity at SMU was compelling. The university’s athletics program is on a significant upward trajectory, and I am confident we can achieve even greater successes.”
Located near downtown Dallas, SMU has significantly bolstered its sports infrastructure, investing over $250 million since 2013. Key developments include the modernization and enhancement of the Moody Coliseum, as well as the construction of a new end-zone complex for football, which was completed this past season. In their first ACC season, the Mustangs joined the extensive 12-team College Football Playoff.
Furthermore, SMU recently appointed Andy Enfield as the men’s basketball coach, assembling a skilled team that advanced to the second round of the National Invitation Tournament with a commendable record of 24-10.
The transition of leadership at SMU coincides with President R. Gerald Turner’s decision to step down after a 30-year tenure. Announced in August, his departure will usher in a new era under Jay Hartzell, who will assume the presidency on June 1, having formerly served as the University of Texas president.
Prior to his new appointment, Evans was in discussions regarding the extension of Maryland men’s basketball coach Kevin Willard’s contract, along with potential revisions to the program. Evans’ move to SMU marks a significant chapter for both him personally and the university’s athletic ambitions.
