CALGARY, Alberta — In an electrifying finish, Nazem Kadri secured his second goal of the match just 3:58 into overtime, propelling the Calgary Flames to a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night.
Teammates Adam Klapka and Rasmus Andersson contributed to the scoreboard, as the Flames sealed their fourth consecutive come-from-behind triumph. Matt Coronato played a pivotal role, earning two assists that showcased his playmaking abilities.
The Flames are nipping at the heels of the red-hot St. Louis team, trailing by four points for the coveted final playoff position in the Western Conference, while maintaining the strategic advantage of three games in hand.
For the Kraken, Jaden Schwartz stood out with a power-play goal and an assist, though the team succumbed to its third straight defeat. Contributions also came from Tye Kartye and Jordan Eberle, whose ninth goal equalized the score with only 1:30 left in the final period.
Between the pipes, Dustin Wolf was formidable, making 26 saves and advancing to a 24-14-5 record. On the opposite end, Joey Daccord faced 33 shots, falling to a 23-19-5 record despite his efforts.
The match unfolded with Seattle gaining their sole lead during the second period after being down by a goal initially. Schwartz’s equalizer at the 10:25 mark ignited the momentum, and Kartye capitalized on a defensive gap to net his fifth goal of the season at 18:42, marking a significant moment for the fourth-liner given his recent scoring drought.
The Flames were dealing with absences, as captain Mikael Backlund, battling an upper-body injury, participated in practice earlier but was still unavailable for the matchup, marking his sixth game missed. Conversely, Calgary welcomed back defenseman MacKenzie Weegar, returning after a lower-body injury.
A key series of plays unfolded when Kadri knotted the game at 2-2 in the third period. This crucial goal came during an extended power play after Brandon Montour’s high-sticking violation on Coronato. Andersson then gave Calgary the temporary lead with a goal at 15:49, only to have Eberle’s answer at 18:30 push the game into sudden death overtime.
As the season progresses, one striking statistical note is Seattle’s unbeaten run while leading after two periods, now at 16-0-1. Only Minnesota remains perfect in such scenarios presently, while the Tampa Bay Lightning’s 26-0-0 record from the 2020-21 season echoes as the last flawless campaign in that regard.
Looking ahead, Seattle is set to start a home series against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday, whereas the Flames will host the Dallas Stars that evening.
