CHICAGO — The annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities in Chicago have kicked off with a vibrant display as the Chicago River transformed into a striking kelly green.
This cherished tradition lures thousands of spectators who line the riverbanks and pack the bridges, eagerly watching the spectacle unfold.

Organized by the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union Local 130, this river-dyeing ritual has been a hallmark of the city’s celebrations for over 63 years.
From boats cruising along the waterway, union members spritz the river with dye, an act met with cheers and applause from the gathered onlookers.

The river dyeing sets the stage for the annual downtown St. Patrick’s Day parade, a lively event celebrating Irish heritage.
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is honored on this day for his role in spreading Christianity to the country during the fifth century.

It’s important to note that the dye used is environmentally friendly, ensuring the safety of the river’s ecosystem.
While the eye-catching green hue remains prominent for several hours, residual traces linger a few days afterward.

Adding to the weekend’s festivities, a second St. Patrick’s Day parade took place on Sunday on Chicago’s South Side, continuing the city’s enthusiastic embrace of Irish culture.
