SAINT GEORGE, Utah — The Utah Tech Trailblazers secured a much-needed win on Tuesday, triumphing over Southern Utah 72-65 in the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. This victory marked the end of a challenging 13-game losing streak for Utah Tech.
The Trailblazers were led by Hakim Byrd, who scored an impressive 19 points and also contributed three steals. Noa Gonsalves played a pivotal role, adding 14 points while shooting 5 for 11, which included a notable 3 for 5 from the three-point line. Meanwhile, Samuel Ariyibi added 11 points, shooting 4 of 11 from the field and 3 of 4 from the free-throw line, along with adding six rebounds and five assists to his stats.
The Southern Utah Thunderbirds saw strong performances from Dominique Ford, who scored 16 points and secured two steals, and Jamir Simpson, who contributed 13 points and seven rebounds.
Utah Tech managed to take the lead with a little over ten minutes left in the first half and maintained their advantage throughout the remainder of the game. Byrd scored 14 points during the first half, driving his team to a 38-27 lead at halftime. In the second half, Gonsalves led the scoring with eight points, ensuring the victory for the Trailblazers.
