JOHANNESBURG – Tragedy struck early Tuesday when a bus overturned on a highway near Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport, leading to the loss of 16 lives, as confirmed by the transport ministry. According to Collen Msibi, a ministry spokesman, 12 individuals succumbed at the crash scene while an additional four passed away at a hospital.
The collision left a staggering aftermath, with 11 passengers critically injured and a further 24 sustaining moderate to severe injuries. Emergency management spokesperson, William Ntladi from Ekurhuleni municipality, described the grim scene upon arriving, mentioning that multiple patients were sprawled across the highway after the accident.
Within the wreckage, two bodies remained trapped, with personal belongings such as handbags, a lunch box, and a water bottle scattered amongst the debris. The incident happened as the bus transported commuters from Katlehong township towards Johannesburg, attempting to exit the highway when it lost control. No other vehicles were involved, but authorities have yet to ascertain the cause behind the unfortunate event.
Local city councilor, Andile Mngwevu, expressed his profound dismay at the site of the crash. “We are lost for words. This is a disaster,” he stated, reflecting on the devastation and expressing condolences to the bereaved families, who had anticipated the safe return of their loved ones.
South African Transport Minister Barbra Creecy voiced significant concern over the tragic occurrence, particularly as it marked the third major bus incident within a week. In response, she has directed the Road Traffic Management Corporation to convene with bus operators in the forthcoming days to explore enhanced measures for ensuring passenger safety.
