MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — In a strategic move to bolster their quarterback lineup, the Miami Dolphins have agreed to terms with Zach Wilson, a former first-round draft pick from the New York Jets. Wilson will step in as a backup to Tua Tagovailoa under a one-year contract. The agreement includes a $6 million guaranteed salary. Details regarding the contract have been kept confidential as official signings can only commence this Wednesday.

Wilson, who was drafted by the Jets as the second overall pick in 2021, spent the previous season on the roster of the Denver Broncos but did not see any action on the field. His stint with the Jets was characterized by a mix of promise and struggles. Despite his strong arm and agility, which initially marked him as a leading prospect, a series of poor decisions and inconsistent performance led to a mixed record. Over three seasons, he accumulated 6,293 yards passing, 498 yards rushing, 23 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions, finishing with a starting record of 12-21 before losing his starting position in 2023.

Faced with Tagovailoa’s injury-prone season, wherein he missed six games and suffered three diagnosed concussions over two years, the Dolphins were keen to reinforce their quarterback depth. Last season saw Miami’s reliance on a trio of backup quarterbacks—Skylar Thompson, Tim Boyle, and Tyler Huntley—without much success. Huntley appeared in five games, resulting in a 2-3 record.

General Manager Chris Grier had expressed intentions to enhance the backup quarterback situation following the previous season’s challenges. In addition to Wilson’s signing, the Dolphins have retained defensive tackle Matt Dickerson, who participated in four games last year, signaling a commitment to strengthening their defensive line.
