In Jaipur, the much-anticipated International Indian Film Academy Awards celebrated the achievements within India’s vibrant film industry. The film “Laapataa Ladies,” directed by Kiran Rao, stole the spotlight at the 2025 IIFA Awards by taking home 10 honors, including the coveted awards for Best Picture and Best Director. This film, which was India’s official Oscar entry but did not secure a nomination, made a resounding impact with its compelling narrative.

“Laapataa Ladies,” known as “Lost Ladies” during its Oscar campaign, is a 2023 comedy revolving around the comedic confusion of two veiled brides who are mistakenly switched during a train journey. The film delves into themes of patriarchy and gender roles, marking a significant move away from the traditionally male-centric focus of mainstream Indian cinema.

In her acceptance speech, Kiran Rao expressed her gratitude, stating, “It’s a rare privilege to win an award for a film like ‘Laapataa Ladies.’ It’s been a wonderful night. It’s a rare privilege to make a film like this.” The film further stood out by winning awards for Best Story, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress in a Leading Role, emphasizing its departure from the conventional Bollywood formula of song-and-dance numbers, melodrama, and action.

The annual IIFA ceremony kicked off on Saturday and concluded on Sunday in Jaipur. The event attracted some of the most renowned figures in Indian cinema. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and actor Shahid Kapoor were among the performers who captivated the audience with their acts. The show was skillfully hosted by the renowned director and producer Karan Johar, along with actor Kartik Aaryan.

Alongside honoring cinematic brilliance, the awards ceremony provided a platform for Indian celebrities to flaunt their fashion sense. This year, notable personalities like Madhuri Dixit, Katrina Kaif, and Kareena Kapoor Khan wowed the crowd with their stylish appearances on the green carpet, adding a touch of glamor to the prestigious night.
