BERLIN — All flights scheduled for Monday at Berlin’s airport have been preemptively canceled in anticipation of a significant labor strike slated to affect over half a million passengers and disrupt thousands of flights at 11 major airports throughout Germany.
The labor union known as ver.di, which represents ground staff at airports, declared the strike last Friday, providing travelers with an opportunity to adjust their plans accordingly. The strike action will impact airports in Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt/Main, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Hanover, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin-Brandenburg, and Leipzig-Halle.
According to the airport association ADV, the strike is projected to inconvenience more than 510,000 passengers, potentially resulting in the cancellation of approximately 3,400 flights on Monday.
The ver.di union is pushing for improved working conditions, increased wages, and additional days off as part of its negotiation efforts.
Beyond causing significant travel disruptions, the strike is expected to have economic repercussions for hotels, restaurants, and retailers, according to the ADV.
