NORTH PORT, Fla. — The Atlanta Braves disclosed on Monday that their catcher, Sean Murphy, is dealing with a cracked rib, which is anticipated to sideline him for approximately four to six weeks. This development opens up an opportunity for Drake Baldwin, a top prospect, to step into the role of starting catcher at the beginning of the season.
At 30 years old, Murphy had a notable season in 2023, earning the status of an All-Star. Unfortunately, his performance took a hit last year after suffering an abdominal strain during opening day. He concluded the season with a .193 batting average, alongside 10 home runs and 25 RBIs over 72 games.
In the offseason, the Braves opted not to exercise Travis d’Arnaud’s $8 million contract option, essentially paving the way for Murphy to assume the position of the primary catcher. Meanwhile, d’Arnaud has moved on to join the Angels.
The only other catcher listed on Atlanta’s 40-man roster is Chadwick Tromp. Tromp showcased his abilities in 2024, achieving a .250 batting average across 19 games.
