WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Kyle Finnegan, a prominent closer, has formalized a one-year contract valued at $6 million with the Washington Nationals. In a corresponding move, the team placed outfielder Stone Garrett on assignment Thursday.
Finnegan, who is 33 years old and right-handed, gained recognition as a National League All-Star for the first time last season. With 38 saves in 2024, he ranked third in Major League Baseball for saves that year.
After becoming a free agent in November due to the Nationals choosing not to extend a new contract, Finnegan transitioned from his previous $5.1 million salary. Initially, projections estimated that he might have earned approximately $8.5 million had he stayed eligible for arbitration.
Over the span of his five-year Major League career, all spent with the Nationals, Finnegan has accumulated a record of 22 wins and 26 losses, alongside a 3.56 ERA. He secured 88 saves out of 109 opportunities and achieved 288 strikeouts over 290 1/3 innings pitched.
Meanwhile, the 28-year-old Garrett found himself participating in just two games last season. His appearances were limited due to a recovery period exceeding a year following a fractured left leg.
