In Munich, a major disruption occurred on Thursday as a two-day strike by airport workers led to severe flight cancellations. This strike, affecting Germany’s second-busiest airport, caused approximately 80% of flights to and from Munich to be scrapped. There were also warnings of potential further disruptions.
The “warning strike,” initiated by the ver.di service workers’ union, is a strategic move commonly used during pay negotiations in Germany. This action comes as part of ongoing discussions with the federal and local governments regarding wages and working conditions for public-sector employees. The strike is scheduled to conclude at midnight on Friday, impacting various workers, including those involved in ground handling services.
Similar protests were observed across Germany, with public sector workers participating in different areas and services. Notably, some employees at Hamburg Airport joined the strike; however, the airport reported that the only disrupted flights were those linked to the Munich cancellations. As a precaution, Hamburg Airport recommended that travelers arrive early and, if feasible, travel with just hand luggage.
