TURIN, Italy — In an unexpected turn of events, Empoli has advanced to the Italian Cup semifinals for the first time in its history, achieving a shocking victory over the reigning champions, Juventus, in a penalty shootout on Wednesday.
During regular time, Khéphren Thuram netted a remarkable equalizer for Juventus after Youssef Maleh had opened the scoring for Empoli, concluding the match at 1-1. However, the drama unfolded during penalties, where Dusan Vlahovic sent his attempt over the bar, and Kenan Y?ld?z’s shot was saved, sealing Juventus’ fate.
Unfazed, Empoli executed all their penalties with precision and secured a spot in the two-legged semifinal against Bologna next month.
