DUNEDIN, Fla. — Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson reassured fans and the team regarding Bryce Harper’s health after the star player exited an exhibition match against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday. Harper was struck on the arm by a pitch from Richard Lovelady.
Thomson informed reporters that Harper sustained a bruise on his right arm due to the 92 mph pitch thrown by the left-hander from Toronto. “We’ll reassess him tomorrow, but it’s just a contusion on the triceps area,” Thomson explained, adding that Harper was already scheduled for a break on Thursday.
The game saw four players being hit by pitches, and Lovelady also received a wild pitch charge. Thomson speculated on the situation, “It’s early in spring training, so pitchers are still honing their command. Multiple players got hit today, and perhaps Lovelady was a bit on edge considering it was Bryce Harper at the plate. These things happen in baseball.”
Concerns about Harper’s condition seem minimal for the time being, and the team is hopeful for a swift recovery from the outfielder’s minor injury.
