LEIPZIG, Germany — Benjamin Šeško’s crucial penalty secured Leipzig a place in the semifinals of the German Cup, as they edged out Wolfsburg 1-0 in their quarterfinal clash on Wednesday.
Leipzig, who claimed the title in 2023, joins third-tier side Arminia Bielefeld, along with Stuttgart and current holders Bayer Leverkusen, in advancing to the semifinals.
The decisive moment came in the 69th minute when Šeško successfully converted the penalty following a handball incident involving Wolfsburg’s Kilian Fischer. The incident, triggered by Šeško’s close-range shot hitting Fischer’s arm, stood unchallenged by the video assistant referee.
Remarkably, this penalty marked the first time Wolfsburg had conceded during this season’s competition, having previously secured victories over Koblenz (1-0), Borussia Dortmund (1-0), and Hoffenheim (3-0).
Wolfsburg’s Mohammed Amoura came close to equalizing post-break, striking the crossbar in one of the match’s tense moments.
The eagerly awaited semifinals are scheduled for April 1 and 2, with the draw to determine matchups taking place on Sunday.
