ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Detroit Red Wings have strategically opened up $3.6 million in salary cap space by trading goaltender Ville Husso to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday. This financial maneuver will provide the Red Wings with greater flexibility in their roster management.
The trade sent the 30-year-old Husso, who has primarily played in the minor leagues this season, from Detroit to Anaheim. During his time with the Red Wings, he achieved a record of 1-5-2. Additionally, with the AHL’s Grand Rapids team, he posted an 8-4 record, including two shutout victories.
This trade comes as Husso approaches the end of his three-year contract. Anaheim has decided to assign him to their AHL affiliate located in San Diego, highlighting their developmental plans for the Finnish netminder.
Throughout his five-year tenure in the NHL, Husso boasts an overall record of 70-45-18 along with seven shutouts. He was initially brought to Detroit as part of a trade involving a third-round 2022 draft pick from St. Louis in July of that year.
As the NHL season progresses, this move exemplifies the type of strategic decisions teams make to optimize their roster and financial resources.
