SANTA CLARA, Calif.—The San Francisco 49ers have reinforced their offensive line by signing Ben Bartch to a one-year contract for the 2025 season. This new deal positions Bartch as a key contender for the starting left guard role next year.

Securing Bartch on Monday signifies the Niners’ commitment before he could enter free agency when the new league year begins soon. Having joined San Francisco midway through the 2023 season, Bartch impressed the team enough to be included in future plans. The 49ers anticipate needing a successor for Aaron Banks, who is expected to leave in free agency.

Last season, Bartch started in two games, performing admirably during a game against Buffalo, although he sustained a high ankle sprain in the next match. This injury aggravated his condition, causing him to miss the remainder of the season.

Initially, Bartch was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. During his time with the Jaguars, he started 20 games before being released in 2023. Bartch subsequently joined the 49ers, where he primarily served as a backup and contributed on special teams.

Strengthening the offensive line is crucial for the 49ers as they seek improvement in the upcoming season. The team faced challenges in creating running lanes, particularly in short-yardage scenarios, and struggled with protecting quarterback Brock Purdy from pressure.

The Niners are hopeful that starting left tackle Trent Williams will return in full health after he missed a significant portion of the previous season due to injuries. Dominick Puni’s performance as a rookie at right guard was noteworthy, but San Francisco may explore upgrades in the other line positions.
