TERRY, Miss. — A deputy with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office was tragically shot and killed while responding to a call near Jackson, Mississippi, according to official reports.
Deputy Martin Shields Jr., 37, lost his life following the shooting incident that took place on Sunday evening, as stated by the sheriff’s office.
The deputy was attending to a domestic disturbance call at a property located on Midway Road in Terry, which is situated southwest of the state capital. Details regarding the specific events leading up to the shooting have not been widely disclosed at this moment.
Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones recounted that he was monitoring police radio communications, which indicated that Shields and another deputy were dispatched to the scene. He recalled hearing a particularly alarming message on the radio that stated, “shots fired, shots fired.”
Sheriff Jones expressed his concern as he and his team attempted to contact Deputy Shields over the radio, but received no response. “My heart sank as I rushed to the scene, not getting a response from the fallen deputy,” he shared on social media.
In a heartfelt tribute, the sheriff remarked, “Deputy Shields died a hero, embodying the courage and commitment we all share in serving and protecting our community,” in an updated post on Monday.
Upon investigation of the scene, authorities discovered a deceased individual inside the residence. However, further information about the person’s identity and the circumstances surrounding their death have yet to be revealed.
Deputy Shields had served in the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office for approximately nine months but had prior experience in law enforcement, as noted by officials.
